Celebrate Recovery - Christ-centered 12 Steps
CR (Christian 12 Steps) was founded in the early 1990s by John Baker and Pastor Rick Warren. A return to AAs roots, CR acknowledges the same Lord and Savior, the same God that Bill and Bob acknowledged when AA began. The power of Jesus Christ is so phenomenal that when Bill and Bob and the first more than 100 members of AA embraced Christianity with all of their strength, all of their heart and all of their mind, even the most stubborn and addicted alcoholic found freedom from alcoholism. Born from the Oxford Group, a 6 step Christian fellowship through which Bill worked the 6 Steps in order to find freedom, there was no doubt that it was Jesus Christ, God's Word and Holy Spirit Power that was key to overcoming alcoholism. So powerful and amazing was the change these first members experienced that BIll wrote a book about it. Only then did the Enemy - cunning, baffling, powerful - start to infiltrate AAs program, diluting this incredible program to what became a shadow of it's former self.
CR is a return to the same faithful process that Bill and Bob first discovered, including the acknowledgement of the One True God - "there is One who has all power. May you find Him now" - and alcoholics and drug addicts alike are again experiencing the phenomenal success rate that the original AAs first experienced.
As American alcoholics and addicts once again seek the Lord with all their heart, the power and strength of God flows into them. God is not a matter of opinion, and never has been. God is who He is, despite who anyone might think He is. Nothing we can say or do will change who God is, and the determining factor to embracing the full power of God's love lies solely with the individual's willingness to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
God's way works, whether we believe He is a doorknob or a rainbow, His way works. Being misled into thinking that God is anyone other than Jesus Christ only serves to separate us from Him, to put distance between the alcoholic and the One True God. The Steps still work, even if we deny His Holy Name. But as God's word teaches us, when we embrace our Lord with all of our hearts, soul, mind and strength, the fullness of His power flows in. A doorknob, a rainbow, an imaginary goddess or nature - none have the desire for relationship with you or me. Jesus Christ has expressed His longing for a close and loving relationship with each of us. That is the difference between knowing that there IS a god, and knowing God personally, the same difference which occurs when we know there is a woman who will become our wives, and knowing that woman personally.
Clearly, as Bill stated: AA is "Spiritual kindergarten". When you are ready for Spiritual grade school, middle school, high school and college, call on the name of the Most High God and He will walk you through such an education. Some stay in Spiritual kindergarten forever, comfortable in the little chairs, playing with Spiritual blocks and crayons. Some of us, however, long to grow up and to become Spiritually mature, to do what Jesus did when He walked the Earth such as healing the sick, raising the dead and helping to free the slaves from the Enemy's grip. Jesus told us that we could do everything He had done while he was here, and then some. Spiritual kindergarten, however, is but a beginning to our Spirtual lives. When we humbly seek the Lord with all we've got, that gives Him permission to transform us completely, to fill us with His Holy Spirit and to teach us that which no kindergartner will ever understand.
When we are ready to grow up Spiritually, He is right there waiting for each of us. He knows the plans He has for us, to prosper us and not to harm us. It is WE who are unfamiliar with the plans He has for us, but when we open our hearts and minds and draw close to Jesus, He makes His plans for us as clear as day.
I praise God for CR, a return to AA's roots. CR is a return to Jesus Christ, the founder of 12 Step programs. Hallelujah!

sonomacountycr.com Sonoma County CR does recovery like Bill & Bob did in the beginning when AA had a 74-93% success rate. This method of recovery worked so well they wrote a book about it! Then they abandoned the very elements which made AA so successful in the beginning. CR picked up that ball and is running with it!
